Few materials evoke as immediate and universal a response as bubble wrap. PLURI, by Maria Nielsen, inspired by the Latin term meaning 'many', 'several', or 'more than one', is an exploration of this material's abundant interpretations and incarnations. Drawing inspiration from 'PLURIBAL', which gestures towards a singular material treated in various ways, this exhibition dives into the depth and breadth of bubble wrap's significance in our lives.
From the simple and innocent joy of popping each bubble, a childhood memory was relived, and the tactile sensation of the wrap started an imaginative journey for Maria. A pattern that could be deconstructed and then reimagined in diverse ways. This led to a series of drawings and designs, replicated, and translated. Maria embraced the bubble wrap as a material to study, discovering newer patterns even within its uniformity.
Every piece is crafted by hand, meticulously put together, ensuring that every stitch tells a tale. Inspired by her family, she incorporates childhood memories, not only of bubble wrap but of sewing and crafting, breathing life into every work. While her foundation lies in fashion, Maria's vision for the future is expansive. She aims to bridge the realms of design and art, exploring collaborations and establishing her unique touch in various domains. Her colorful style, tinged with humor and whimsy, is her signature. It's not about being serious; it's about being genuine.
